Ultimate Survival is a shift from normal Minecraft. In this guide I will lay out how we re-thought Minecraft survival and what it means for you.
This guide will be added to soon.

Ultimate Survival Guide tl;dl

Ultimate Survival reworks the way blocks and tools interact, the way the player interacts with the environment, how the environment responds and more. The thinking behind this is to try to make it more life-like and hopefully more intuitive. However, we understand for experienced players this change can be challenging. We’ve made this guide to aid in understanding the technicalities of this server. Reference it as needed.

OVERWORLD

Where it all begins…

This world is much like our own, rich with biomes that are home to a variety of plants, animals and foods. Beneath your feet lay the valuable materials used to build virtually anything once can dream of. Above ground, things are pretty normal with some exceptions. Torches cannot be placed on soft blocks such as dirt, grass, or sand. Torches will also wash away in the rain. Therefore it’s best to cover them or enclose them in a lantern.

CLIMATE

The world does have a climate however and the balance of it relies on you, the players. In your scoreboard (on the right) you will see a temperature, your name and a score. If your score is positive, you are responsible for contributing carbon and methane into the atmosphere. If the number is negative you are reducing carbon from the atmosphere. The significance of this is profound – As carbon levels rise, the global temperature will rise, the ice in frozen biomes will melt and the oceans will rise globally.
14℃ is normal.
Once the world reaches 15℃ the oceans will begin to rise.
The impact is:

  • Melting of frozen biomes, snow and ice
  • flooded lowlands
  • Rivers and lakes rise and widen
  • Caves, ravines and mines may fill with water*
  • Animals and Villages may be displaced
  • Less land to work with
  • Storms become stronger and occur more frequently
  • Wildfires breakout
  • Negative Health Effects
  • Animals begin to decrease (extinction)
  • Some monsters become stronger and more plentiful than they already are
  • in mc 1.16 JE every block of still water is a source block making it very difficult to remove water.

As temperatures continue to rise, the oceans will too until only high hills, mountain tops and treetops are visible.

What causes this? Smelting and Killing animals. Smelting is the worst culprit. The list of burnable materials is too long to publish here, so the following are the worst and best materials to smelt with in order of carbon emissions and quantity of materials smelted accounted for.
WORST: COAL_BLOCK > COAL = CHARCOAL > WOOD > LAVA
BEST: BLAZE_ROD > DRIED_KELP_BLOCK > LAVA

So how do you balance this? Each player caries the responsibility of maintaining this environment. The only way to reduce atmospheric carbon is to grow trees. Trees and their leaves absorb carbon from the air and will reduce the CO2 levels which in turn will also reduce the global temperature. As the temperature normalizes the ocean levels will drop back down to their appropriate level, however it is possible to go too far and over cool the climate.
If the world reaches 13℃ or cooler
The impact is global cooling (ice age):

  • Ocean level drop
  • Rivers and lakes dry up
  • More frozen biomes, snow and ice
  • Animals and Villages may be displaced
  • More land to work with, less productive crops.
  • Negative Health Effects
  • Animals begin to decrease (extinction)
  • Some monsters become stronger and more plentiful than they already are…
CAVES and MINING

Caves are damp and dark places with weird smells and terrible creatures lurking within them. Unfortunately caves are so damp that open flame torches cannot be lit. So consider enclosing them in a lantern or using some other method to light your way.

Down in these depths, as if the darkness wasn’t already enough to worry about, you are entering the realm of monsters. In the depths of the Overworld a Creeper’s powers become stronger, unlike their surface cousins that only ignite fires when they burst, underground Creepers have a powerful explosion and will carve a large hole into the world when they decide to go off. Their exploding strength is slightly higher than that of tnt in a normal Minecraft Survival world. Furthermore charged creepers may spawn either above or below ground. When you see one of these glowing baddies, run. They will ignite in an instant with the slighted prick of a blade or a flick of a flame. Their explosion strength is nearly double that of their uncharged relatives. They will blow craters into the ground and scatter rocks into the air both above and below ground. Underground explosions are especially dangerous as they may punch through to a lava reservoir and they cause massive cave-ins.

Speaking of underground explosions, the quickest and most efficient manner to clear stone under and above ground: TNT.

BLOCKS and TOOLS

Below is a list of some of the different block types and what tools you need to obtain them.

    Trees

  • Acacia
  • Birch
  • Dark Oak
  • Jungle
  • Oak
  • Spruce
  • Warped *
  • Crimson *
Properties: Gravity affects them. When you cut one down, the entire tree falls into a heap.
Special Tools: Golden Axe will drop an Overworld tree in an instant at the cost of the tool.
– Gold Axe is good for a single tree.
* Native to Nether biomes since 1.16 JE
    Soft Blocks

  • Sand
  • Red Sand
  • Gravel *
  • Dirt *
  • Coarse Dirt *
  • Grass Path *
  • Grass Block
  • Mycelium
  • Podzol
  • Farmland
Properties: Gravity affects them when a block is broken updated beside them. May unexpectedly cave in or form a sinkhole across a large area where a cave is below them.
Special Tools: Wood Shovel and up, with the exception – the Golden Shovel. This item’s sole purpose is for the area protection system.
* Requires better tools (Iron and up); Tools wear faster.
    Hard Blocks

  • Stone
  • Andesite *
  • Diorite *
  • Granite **
Properties: Gravity affects them singularly when a block is broken beside them.
Special Tools: Wood Pickaxe and up.
* Requires better tools (Iron and up); Tools wear faster.
** Requires better tools (Diamond and up); Tools wear faster.
    Water Forms

  • Water
  • Snow *
  • Ices
Properties: Gravity affects snow and allows it to pile up. Walking through a pile of snow slows you down.
All still water from surface to bottom is always a source block.
Ice melts when the climate changes.
Special Tools: Buckets are a bit too small and cannot move a full block of water. If you need water, you’ll need to obtain ice.
Advice: this might be a good trade item to have
* Thin patches cannot be shoveled but as snow piles up, entire blocks can be obtained with a shovel.
MONSTERS

Creepers: we covered above.
Zombies: when they touch you they cause numbness in your legs as the zombification affect begins to take hold. This causes you to move slower. As the zombie touches you again or as others close in you will move slower and slower until you die. When you kill a Zombie, due to their undead nature there is a chance they might revive and come for you again.
Skeletons: this malnourished lot are vicious and expert markspersons with the bow. Their arrows will cause blindness, snow and icy patches in any biome, may burn you and also spawn silverfish.
Endermen: Did you think they were hard to battle because they can teleport? Well, now they teleport you to them. Good luck hiding from these guys.
Witches: Witches have learned to conjure up some new brews and are bent on making you rage quit. They throw bombs, spawn Baby Zombies behind you, teleport you and more.
Killer Rabbit: 1-2% chance that any rabbit spawned in the Overworld spawns as “the most foul, cruel, and bad-tempered rodent you ever set eyes on..” Run away! Run away! Run away!
Guardian: They spawn randomly throughout the ocean!
Vex: A vile beast of small stature that can pass through any door, floor or wall. Despite their size, they pack a mighty punch and can spawn anywhere at anytime.

NETHER

What fresh hell is this?!

The Minecraft JE 1.16 release is a major update to the Nether adding new mobs, biomes, plants, materials and places called bastion remnants and ruined portals. Read more this addition on the official Minecraft wiki.

CLIMATE

Unlike the Overworld, the Nether is hot.. Really hot. Therefore the climate here is not affected by Global Warming. And due to their dimensional separation, the heat of the Nether has zero affect on the climate of the Overworld.
